Adjusting to Change from a Music Perspective

pianoWe are creatures of habit. We like familiarity. We have our favorite foods, movies, and music. We are wired for routine...or are we?

“Music is always changing and the changes are unpredictable.” – Billy Sheehan

Making changes in our lives, whether big or small, can be somewhat of a struggle. Musicians and people of a creative nature know that in order to thrive, we have to make changes when and where necessary. Think outside the box. Creative minds cannot stand idle, otherwise we would lose our ever-loving minds!

Many of us today have a smart phone. We love our tech. Can you imagine what would have happened when Steve Jobs and his team at Apple came up with the idea for the iPhone but instead said, “we don’t need a smart phone, the flip phone works just fine.” Now pick your jaw up off the floor. Exactly.

We thrive when we adjust to changes. We can never think big if we sit idle in our comfort zone. Big things don’t happen to people who stand idle. Dreams do not become a reality if we never even try!

My motto has been “Making music dreams a reality.” The same can be applied to you and anyone else who has a dream, a desire, that you want to become real.

Most of my music career has been primarily playing rock ‘n roll music. I’ve been playing the same cover tunes, using the same effects pedals, using the same guitar for decades. I was in a routine. I was in my comfort zone. I wasn’t writing or coming up with anything creative, and it bugged the you-know-what out of me.

I had to break out of what I've been doing and make the necessary adjustments to come up with something completely unique to my music style. And that’s what I did.

Instrumental music has intrigued me for some time. Once I started composing instrumentals the ideas were pouring out. Even then I would still make adjustments to the music arrangements. In the studio I was constantly making adjustments. Necessary changes that would have a positive impact my songs. My album “In the Beginning” is about change, about new beginnings. Not holding back.

What if there came a time where making a change would happen whether you want it to or not. If you start now by getting out of your comfort zone it makes adjusting to changes easier. But most of all, if you’re in a rut, evaluate how you got into that rut, and come up with a solution. If you have an idea or a dream you’ve been meaning to chase. Do it! Right this second!

Just as I’m doing, I want you to make your dreams become a reality. It starts with change.
